August 28th, MLK at Lincoln Memorial to give his I Have a Dream speech
The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) was an African American civil right's organization that always preached non violence in all campaign's ,this conference had a huge role in the civil rights movement. SCLC was formed in 1957 after the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the main plan was to advance the cause of civil rights in the United States. The group pulled independence and power of black churches to support activist. Martin Luther King was president of the SCLC it was voted that MLK was the best person for the SCLC, Martin Luther wanted to submit civil rights to America. MLK himself said “(The SCLC is) church-orientated because of the very structure of the Negro community in the South.”The Southern Christian Leadership Conference was an organization that could organize, advise and build up work done by various civil rights groups in Southern states. SCLC had a major role in African Americans lives, the organization helped black Americans register to vote, and opened up citizenship schools. In Birmingham 1963, a huge outrage occurred which is not what the organization had hoped for, however because of SCLC Birmingham moved closer to the thought of desegregation. Further more in 1963, the SCLC also participated in the March on Washington for jobs and freedom, it was the biggest demonstration ever seen at the nation's capital . On August 28th about 250,000 people marched to petition equal opportunities and justice for all Americans. This is the day MLK had made his famous " I Have a Dream" speech which entitled a complete end to racism. The speech was held at The Lincoln Memorial honoring Abraham Lincoln who announced the Emancipation Proclamation, releasing all slaves in the South. The I Have a Dream Speech was made nation wide by being printed in news papers and played on the radio. Lots more people knew MLK then before all from his speech.
In 1965 The Southern Christian Leadership Conference began a major campaign to register black voters. All SCLC wanted was to see a better community for African Americans (better jobs, housing and pay) to make sure better quality for all.
